THE PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME
Feature / hybrid documentary / in-development
LOGLINE: A self-reflexive, hybrid documentary about a child actor turned filmmaker who deconstructs his upbringing in the hopes of becoming a happier, more authentic version of himself.
SYNOPSIS: Child actor turned filmmaker Brendan Prost suspects his career as a performer has made him overly reliant on the validation of others. Now a debilitatingly self-conscious adult, Brendan has a deep desire to reach a more authentic version of himself. Through recreation, behind the scenes footage, interviews with friends and family, archival home video, and verité moments, Brendan re-stages and then deconstructs his most formative childhood memories. By slowly incorporating different forms of non-fiction storytelling, Brendan metabolizes the past from different vantage points, and attempts to parse the parts of himself that are performative. While Brendan entertains the idea of making big life changes, he also learns that being one’s self comes from practicing acceptance and compassion. Brendan makes this film to heal himself, but also for anyone who seeks to love the person that they are.
